New mural to be unveiled celebrating history of Horsey Hill in Holyland

A new mural is to be unveiled in the Holyland area that will celebrate the history and heritage of the area.

The Horsey Hill mural is currently being developed by artist Daniella Balmaverde as part of a Department for Communities project aimed at improving the area and reducing anti-social behaviour.

It is the latest in a series of murals in the Holyland area and is opposite the sunflower mural dedicated to those suffering as a result of the war in Ukraine that has been nominated for an international award.

The mural on Horsey Hill will depict one of the former work horses that used to live and work in the area, pulling boats along the River Lagan.

Brid Ruddy of the Horsey Hill Action Group said that she was thrilled with the project so far and hoped that it could further spur on regeneration in the area, with there being plans to turn the lane into a mini greenway that could be used by all of the community.

She said: "We are thrilled with the work that Daniella has been doing on Horsey Hill which highlights the history and heritage of this part of South Belfast.

"We hope that this is only the beginning of the regeneration of Horsey Hill which we would like to see turned into a small greenway that is safer and more welcoming for the local community and the many pedestrians who use it everyday.

"At the moment Horsey Hill is considered 'unadopted' so it is very difficult to get any statutory bodies to carry out any work in uplifting the area, but with a bit of support the community here could make it somewhere very special, similar to the award winning Wildflower Alley.

"A lot of work has been taking place in the Holyland to uplift the area and make it a nicer place for everyone to live and we have a wonderful series of murals that have been created and the community plans to continue to build on this work in the weeks and months ahead."
