New mural featuring famous Guinness toucan added to Nottingham social club ahead of St Patrick's Day

A Nottingham social club has had a revamp you can't miss. Staff at the social club - described as "good for the soul" - have previously spoken about how they are determined to beat the cost of living crisis.

Now, the Greyfriars social club on Gordon Road in Thorneywood has a new look - and it is getting positive attention in the community. Just in time for St Patrick’s Day, with sponsorship from the Bobbers Mill Dulux Decorator Centre, a mural featuring the Guinness toucan has been painted on the Greyfriars building.

Thanks to local muralist and artist Anthony Donnolley, who also goes by 'Urban Canvas', the mural only took days to complete. Paul Reddington, manager of the club, said: "The mural is certainly eye-catching and puts a smile on your face.

"The Guinness toucan will instantly be recognisable by people from a certain age. We're hoping on St Patrick's Day it [the club] is packed.

"In the past, St Patrick's Day has been a strange day - it's a very long day but people have a lot of fun." The mural has attracted the attention of the Guinness company too.

St Patrick’s Day is on March 17. Paul added: "In the morning, we'll be serving an Irish breakfast, there will be hot food served throughout the day, live music and there will be food like Guinness beef stew."

Also on the day, there will be Gaelic sports to watch on the TV, music from Area 51 and more. The celebration on St Patrick's Day will last from 9am until midnight.

After being inspired by the Greyfrairs fundraiser for Ukraine in 2022, muralist and artist Anthony said: "This place has a big heart.

"It's a place that's good for the soul so I was happy to help. The kids love it [the mural].

"Parents use this as a bit of a car park and already we've been getting positive comments."
