New mural appears in Glasgow for filming of upcoming James McAvoy movie

A NEW mural has appeared in Glasgow's East End for a Hollywood movie being filmed there.

The work, by renowned city graffiti artist Rogue One, is located on a wall on Charlotte Street in the Trongate area.

Inspired by the 1996 film Trainspotting, the mural depicts Ewan McGregor's character Renton and his famous line "It's s**** being Scottish".

(Image: Gordon Terris) The mural is understood to have been created recently and is used in the background of scenes in James McAvoy's directorial debut California Schemin', which is being filmed in the city.

The film centres around Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who are fed up with London record producers not taking Scottish rap seriously and dismissing them as "rapping Proclaimers".

Better known as Silibil N' Brains, the duo soon embark on a remarkable journey rapping alongside Eminem, partying backstage with Madonna, and being tipped as among the next generation of rising stars.

McAvoy previously announced a free noughties-themed Barrowlands gig as part of the production.

(Image: Gordon Terris) The gig’s event page reads: “Think baggy jeans, oversized jerseys, and tracksuits. Top it off with snapbacks, chunky sneakers and some bling to complete the look.

“Go bold and nostalgic – it’s all about that early 2000s vibe!”

(Image: Gordon Terris) Speaking to Deadline about the movie back in May, McAvoy said: "California Schemin’ is as rooted in the California rap scene of the early 2000s as it is in the working-class Scottish setting where our story begins.

"With California Schemin', I’ll be telling a story about friendship, rap and glorious failure that has the potential to move, shock and entertain."

Filming is under way in Glasgow between November 6 and 20 at locations including Maryhill, Park Circus, Glasgow Green and The Barras Market.
