New Lord of the Rings films currently 'in the works' based on JRR Tolkien's books

Several new Lord of the Rings films are currently being made and will be released in the next couple of years.

The movies, which have won multiple Oscar awards over the years, have racked up an impressive £2.5 billion at the box office. Now, fans can get excited about a few new instalments which will be joining the series.

The news was confirmed by Warner Bros chief executive David Zaslav. Swedish gaming company Embracer Group bought the adaptive rights to author JRR Tolkien's work last year which included Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

The Mirror reports that the original films starred some famous faces such as Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom. And last year, TV series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power was released in 2022 on Amazon.

The series follows life in the fictional Middle Earth thousands of years before the books and films were set, and it's estimated to have cost around £800m to make. A second series is in the works, and filming has been ongoing since October last year.

The Swedish company that bought the adaptive rights will get revenue if any film, game or merchandise deal is struck, and it'll also need to be involved in the development process.

In a statement to Variety, Peter Jackson and his collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens said Embracer and Warner Bros had "kept us in the loop every step of the way" about potential new films.

They said: "We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward."

Lee Guinchard, who runs Embracer, said that he and the company are "thrilled" to be working with Warner Bros and New Line Cinema.

They produced the previous three Lord of the Rings films.

Guinchard said in a statement that the company would be "bringing the incomparable world of JRR Tolkien back to the big screen in new and exciting ways".

It is thought that the new films will cover content from books instead of re-visiting the previously released films. The first film adaptation of the books was released in 2001.

While, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was released the following year and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King came out in 2003.
