New look of Temple Bar Square unveiled as work commences

Dublin City Council have commenced work on the refurbishment of Temple Bar Square.

The Temple Bar Square Area Improvement Scheme covers approximately 2,400 square meters and encompasses Crown Alley, Temple Bar Square, Temple Bar Street and parts of Fownes Street Lower and Cope Street. The project will see Temple Bar Street reconstructed with granite footpaths and the traditional Temple Bar cobbled carriageways.

The council aims to make the area a "pedestrian friendly space" and to facilitate more public and cultural activities. The total cost of this project is €5 million and the work is expected to take 18 months to complete.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council’s Roads Section said the construction works will create a single surface finish between the buildings on each side of the Square, including removal of the steps on the central portion of the Square and levelling the height differential between kerbs and carriageway. There will also be newly planted trees and benches, as well as a new public lighting system.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy said: “This area attracts approximately 60,000 pedestrians per day. Together with the ongoing works on Liffey Street, the decision to make Capel Street traffic-free and the plans for College Green, this is another important step in putting pedestrians at the heart of city life.”

According to the city council, while existing delivery vehicle access routes will be maintained for the majority of the work on the square, as work progresses, some road closures and diversion routes will be required. Details of these will be published through the official website of the council.
