New Liverpool FC message to all fans who went to Champions League final

Liverpool FC is urging all fans who attended the Champions League final in Paris in May to seek mental health support if they feel they need it.

The club has launched a new mental health toolkit which "offers further support to fans suffering the ongoing effects of the events surrounding the Champions League final." Liverpool supporters were caught up in ugly scenes outside the Stade de France ahead of the game against Real Madrid.

The Reds went on to lose the match 1-0.

The kick-off for the game was delayed three times with thousands of seats empty in the Liverpool end of the ground. A UEFA message inside the stadium initially said the kick-off had been delayed due to the "late arrival of fans at the stadium".

However, the excuse was slammed by Reds supporters, who were also targeted with tear-gas by French police, with many blaming the organisation from UEFA, and the police, as the reason behind the problems. UEFA has continued to try and blame Liverpool fans for the chaos - despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Despite previously apologising to both Liverpool and Real Madrid fans for the chaotic and dangerous organisation before and after the Stade de France final, UEFA events chief Martin Kallen continued to push discredited claims about fake tickets and the behaviour of LFC supporters earlier this week.

Thousands of Reds fans were forced into dangerously small spaces outside the Stade de France before being targeted with tear gas and pepper spray by French police. After the game a number of supporters were attacked and robbed by local gangs, with no police protection.

Now LFC, working closely with the LFC Foundation and Liverpool’s director of public health, Matt Ashton, has launched a new resource for supporters in the wake of distressing events in Paris.

The club said it has also pledged financial assistance for those organisations already in high demand, and wants supporters to know that expert help continues to be available. Matt Parish, chief executive of LFC Foundation, said: “It’s vitally important that supporters know there is help out there if they feel they need it.

“Working together with a number of expert mental health organisations, and with the support of Matt Ashton’s expertise, this latest resource is available to all fans. It not only signposts people where to go for support but also offers advice to those dealing with the ongoing effects of such a distressing event.”
