New ITV drama that was filmed in a Liverpool GP surgery

ITV's latest drama will see three female doctors return to post-pandemic frontline medicine after maternity leave.

Spanning six episodes, the series will follow the women as they heroically balance the intense demands of the NHS and motherhood. The drama will bring together leading actresses Parminder Nagra (DI Ray, Blacklist), Lara Pulver (The Split, The Alienist) and Lisa McGrillis (King Gary, Mum).

And while it is set in Manchester, it was filmed in Liverpool. Many scenes were actually recorded at Edge Hill Health Centre on Edge Lane.

Other parts of the programme were filmed in an office block at Liverpool Innovation Park, which was transformed into a "hospital".

Maternal is said to explore "working motherhood with wit, warmth and humour and offers a unique perspective on our beloved, overstretched NHS, and the people who hold it together. Sometimes."

Viewers will be introduced to Paediatric Registrar, Dr Maryam Afridi, who is full of doubt that she can cope with the emotional demands of treating children now that she has her own; Ms Catherine MacDiarmid, a single mother and successful surgeon determined to be one of the boys in the macho world of surgery; and Dr Helen Cavendish, a Registrar in Acute Medicine, who is wrestling with a self-prescribed role that sees her mothering everyone in her life.

Maternal begins on Monday, January 16, at 9pm on ITV and ITVX
