Newport's Friars Walk shopping centre has received a boost as a new community skate park is set to open later this year. The indoor skate park is set to take over the unit recently vacated by independent traders The Port with work to start in September before it opens later that month.
The project, which has already raised thousands in funding, will be run as a communal hub for all ages offering recreational inclusive spaces, free workshops, volunteer opportunities and more. The park will provide a much-needed boost to Friars Walk's non-retail offering with Superbowl UK already upstairs and Cineworld still closed indefinitely due to a dispute with the landlord.
The news comes after it emerged that the former Debenhams store in Friars Walk, which has been vacant since last summer, is being considered as a possible location for a technology-focused learning campus. You can read more about that here.
