A person was killed Monday morning in an incident involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Biddeford, Maine, marking the second fatal shooting linked to the federal agency in less than a week. Authorities have released few details, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of Hill and Pool streets in Biddeford, according to local officials. Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, who represents Biddeford, confirmed the fatality in a statement posted on social media.
"This morning, a shooting occurred in Biddeford. A person was killed. ICE was involved," Fecteau wrote, adding that Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety were responding to the scene and that he expected the FBI to investigate.
Local police cordoned off the area Monday morning as investigators gathered evidence. Biddeford Police Chief JoAnne Fisk declined to provide additional information, saying the investigation was not being handled by her department. Spokespeople for ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment from multiple news outlets.

"I saw it, I saw his foot," Hayes told the newspaper, describing the chaotic scene.
The identity of the person who was killed has not been released, nor have officials explained what led to the encounter with federal immigration agents. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the individual was the target of an immigration enforcement operation or whether anyone else was injured.

The incident comes just days after another fatal shooting involving ICE agents in Houston, Texas, where Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed during an enforcement operation. The two incidents have intensified scrutiny of ICE's use of force and raised new questions about transparency surrounding federal immigration enforcement actions.
Monday's shooting also occurred against the backdrop of heightened immigration enforcement activity in Maine. Earlier this year, ICE carried out a large-scale operation across the state, prompting criticism from immigrant advocates, local officials and civil rights organizations over the scope of the arrests and the lack of communication with local communities.
As of Monday afternoon, investigators had not said whether body camera footage, surveillance video or other evidence would be released. The FBI is expected to assist with the investigation because it involves federal law enforcement personnel.
The Department of Homeland Security and ICE had not issued a public statement explaining what occurred by the time of publication. The investigation remains ongoing.
