Plans for 20 new homes on the vandal-hit site of a former school in Stevenston have been given the green light.
The vacant plot between Garven Road and Morris Moodie Avenue - where Ardeer Primary once sat - will boast a mix of two and three-bedroom properties for people currently on housing waiting lists.
Social landlord Cunninghame Housing Association (CHA) was this week granted conditional planning permission to build 18 two-storey homes and two bungalows, including one wheelchair-ready property.
The work will transform 4,500 sq. m of overgrown land which has become a target for vandalism and anti social behaviour - including dumping - since the school was demolished in the early 1980s and relocated in nearby Clark Crescent.
Six objections to the development were raised with North Ayrshire Council, relating to issues over privacy, parking, impact on local services, potential damage to neighbouring properties during construction and bird nesting.
Some of these were raised at a community consultation event held by CHA on July 21 but planning chiefs were satisfied in each instance.
CHA said that the 'general feelings' to the proposed development were positive in a design and access statement lodged with local authority.
It read: "The land has been vacant for a number of years and the general feelings towards the new development were positive. The local residents were happy with the use of the land and agreed the area needs some regeneration."
Documents also showed that pre-application discussions were held with planners where it was mooted that such a development would be welcome.
The plans were approved subject to eight conditions relating to isssues such as ground gas protection measures, landscaping and carbon emission technology.
