Swedish grocery retailer, Motatos, has officially launched in the UK, offering customers up to 60% off big-name brands such as Heinz, Cadbury, Kellogg’s, Walkers and Typhoo. Motatos sells well-known long-life food and household essentials products that would otherwise risk ending up in landfill due to changes in packaging, seasonal changes or short best before dates.
The retailer establishes partnerships with distributors and passes products onto customers at discounted rates - making Motatos a sustainable and cost-effective way to do your weekly shop. One third of all food that is being produced is never consumed.
In the UK, government data shows that around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste is produced in a single year. That makes food waste responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By shopping with Motatos, consumers are reducing the amount of food ending up in landfill and as a result reducing their carbon footprint.
And with the cost of living crisis impacting millions across the UK, Brits can still buy the household names they love without breaking the bank. Motatos Founder, Karl Andersson said: “We’re really excited to be launching in the UK at this stage in our development. There’s so much opportunity here for consumers to be able to help reduce waste whilst also reducing their weekly spend, meaning they don’t have to choose between price and being environmentally-conscious. Shopping with Motatos is good for the planet and good for the wallet.”
More than 20,000 people have already signed up to a waiting list - 20 times more than Motatos predicted. Motatos UK Country Manager, Christabel Biella said: “The cost of living crisis is affecting all sectors and UK shoppers are looking for ways to cut down their monthly spend without compromising on all the brands that they love. With prices surging, Motatos is hoping to make a real difference to consumers by offering savvy savings, allowing them to be sustainability-minded and reduce waste. It’s a win win.”
As well as offering food and pantry items, consumers will be able to shop household essentials such as products from Method Finish, Cif, Vanish, TRESemme hair products and Oral B. Different dietary requirements will also be catered for with options for free from sweets, gluten free cakes and fruit snacks.
