A new cyclone recovery centre will be set up in the Top End ahead of the storm season after the region was hammered by heavy rain and flooding.
The centre in Batchelor, about 100km south of Darwin, will be funded by $7 million from the Northern Territory government's $100 million flood recovery fund.
The respite and recovery facility will also accommodate transitional residents relocating from the Batten Road homeless shelter in Darwin after it closes in October.
The Top End was hit by Cyclone Fina in November and widespread flooding from other heavy rain events in 2025 and early 2026.
The outback town of Katherine was impacted as was the township of Daly River, which was submerged for months, with many residents housed in emergency accommodation in Darwin and Batchelor.
NT Children and Families Minister Robyn Cahill said the new facility would provide transitional accommodation and strengthen emergency preparedness ahead of the cyclone season.
It would have separate areas for residents relocating from the Batten Road homeless centre and emergency evacuees, she said in a statement on Wednesday.
Jo Hersey, the NT Minister for the Flood Recovery Fund, said the investment built on lessons learned during the last cyclone and flood season.
"Having a dedicated site ready will help us support evacuees when needed and reduce disruption to sporting facilities, event venues and schools," she said.
