A newly elected Merseyside councillor has been heavily criticised for social media comments deemed 'racist, sexist and misogynistic'.
Cllr Colin Betts was elected as an independent councillor to represent the Billinge and Seneley Green area of St Helens in the local elections earlier this month. He was one of two independents elected in that ward.
But just weeks after his election, Cllr Betts has come under fire for a host of deeply offensive comments made on social media. Many of the posts were directed at women. The posts, seen by the ECHO, all stem from 2020, with many focussing on the issue of women's involvement in sports. Other comments made by the councillor have been described as racist by his political opponents. Cllr Betts has now removed the posts and apologised to 'everyone he has offended.'
