"UFO" lights are among design plans that have been unveiled for Capel Street.
Following a successful trial last May, councillors voted to permanently pedestrianise the street in November and plans are now in place to improve the area.
Bernard Seymour Landscape Architects (BSLA) are currently working with teams from Dublin City Council’s Environment and Transport Department and their Parks Department to deliver improvements to the street. The plans include additional greenery, outdoor seating and striking lighting fixture which has been called a "UFO" by Twitter users.
The architects said the new elements must "not alone to look good" but act "to slow down cyclists and encourage more people onto the centre of the street". The proposed plans include three raised crossings along the length of the street from Ryders Row to McQuillans Tools to slow down cyclists.
"We are at the stage where we are consulting on the first set of co-ordinated proposals and testing them amongst various stakeholders while at the same preparing costs to see how much can be done in the first phase," the architects said. "The scheme will be modular in nature so that it can continue to be rolled out beyond this initial phase."
The new plans are expected to be implemented on the northern section of the street, from Ryders Row to Mary Street, as early as this summer.
