A new café has opened its doors in a popular park in Weston-super-Mare with an all-vegan menu. Sprout café is based in the Grade II-listed building in Grove Park backed by North Somerset Council with an environmentally conscious ethos.
Council officials say the menu will focus around ‘seed to plate’, with many of the ingredients to be grown by the local community and Sprout. Anna Southwell, of Loves Cafe in the town, has taken over the cafe in Grove Park and renamed it ‘Sprout’.
Owner of Loves and Sprout, Anna Southwell, said: “Looking around, it’s fantastic to see the café being enjoyed by nearby residents and visitors. Our future plans are to start community focused initiatives including working with those affected by domestic violence and refugees.”

"As a plastic free, vegan establishment, we’ve already cut our carbon footprint by at least 75 per cent, and we want to lower that as much as we can. We’re passionate about what we want to achieve here, and really appreciate the support we’ve had from everyone so far.”
The plastic-free café will offer plant-based and gluten-free dishes. It will also host music and food events that utilise the Victorian bandstand and open space of the park.
Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Placemaking and Economy, said: “The council declared a climate emergency in February 2019, aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030. It’s fantastic to welcome another business that’s focused on climate change and doing their bit to make a difference. I look forward to trying some of their gluten free cakes!”
On social media, the news of the vegan cafe was welcomed by residents. Lindsay Hall commented: "Will be definitely paying a visit as my daughter is gluten and dairy free...it's so hard to find food out anywhere!"
Cari Caitlin added: "I visited last week for a work lunch and sat in the sun eating a vegan sausage sandwich which was absolutely delicious, great selection of savouries and cakes as well." While Jay Lenehan said it was nice to see north Somerset supporting so many independent businesses.
Sprout’s first event will be an evening of flamenco and Spanish guitar on June 25 from 6pm when a tapas menu will be served. Sprout, officially opened by Weston-super-Mare mayor Sonia Russe on June 18, will open seven days a week.
