New business aims to address region's route to Net Zero

A new business has been launched in Hull to help regional organisations approach Net Zero.

C3 Group is to provide a turnkey solution to clients who need help to decarbonise, with the promise of making the complex challenge simple.

Dan Haley, founder of award-winning city firm GW Power Safe, has joined forces with Ash Wray, a chartered engineer with his own business working in district heating and heat pumps across the UK. Having met via LinkedIn where they had mutual connections and realised shared passions, they have told of their frustration at the wider building industry overcomplicating the process of carbon and energy reduction - and with energy prices rising, felt compelled to act.

Mr Haley, who led his eight year old firm to the Small Business of the Year accolade at the 2021 Hull Live Business Awards, said: “C3 Group’s founding principle is to make the complex challenge of decarbonisation simple - providing plain-English advice and guidance to clients who may find it daunting taking the first steps towards net zero.

“We have recognised the need for a specialist decarbonisation business that bridges the gap between traditional construction development and creating sustainable buildings. The business aims to provide a holistic service to clients with the goal of achieving long-term energy and cost savings and energy security for building owners.”

It is being aimed at public and private sector building owners, building contractors, and a range of industry and business premises managers.

GW, specialising in mechanical and electrical contracting, now employs more than 40 staff. Early last year it completed the move from a rented unit on Brighton Street Industrial Estate to its own base on Scott Street. C3 will operate from there initially.

Mr Wray completed a Master’s in engineering in Hull, and went on to found Wray Renewables, having previously worked for Sewell Group. He said: “Amid rising energy costs, a strong emphasis has been placed on upgrading the building fabric, introducing renewable energy solutions, and integrating innovative control strategies. C3 Group enriches business by offering a roadmap to decarbonise and take ownership of its energy.”

Of their unification, he added: “We had a lot of mutual contacts, but didn’t know each other. I had a lot of content on LinkedIn about decarbonisation and Dan was quite interested. We went for a coffee, got chatting and developed the vision, something breaking the mould that businesses would like. It has been a natural process, we are both very passionate about it, and about the region, and it feels like a real achievement, and something really good.”

C3 is a nod to the three scopes, the categorising of carbon emissions.
