A new bank holiday has been announced for the King's coronation in 2023, and a clever hack means you can use the state holiday to more than double some annual leave.
If you work a normal shift pattern with weekends and bank holidays off, there's a sneaky way to get extra days - 10 for the price of 4 - without sacrificing any more than you need to. By taking advantage of the existing early May bank holiday, people can take ten days off work using just four days of annual leave.
Last week, Downing Street said the bank holiday will fall on Monday, May 8 following the coronation at Westminster Abbey two days earlier on Saturday May 6. It will take place across the UK.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said – as was the case with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953 – it will be an opportunity for families and communities across the country to come together to celebrate. This is on top of the early May bank holiday, which this year falls on May 1.
For savvy employees who are wanting to maximise their time off, this provides a way to get ten days off, while using up only four days of leave.
How does it work? Your holiday begins on Saturday, April 29. The following day is a Sunday, and the Monday (May 1) is a bank holiday.
So you only need to actually take off Tuesday-Friday, May 2-5, and then you should also be off work on the Saturday, Sunday and following Monday (May 8).
And there you have it, ten days off for the price of four.
