New $6,000 'Senior Bonus' Deduction: What It Means for Taxpayers Age 65 and Older

A significant recent (but temporary) tax change for older adult taxpayers comes in the form of a new benefit known as the “senior bonus deduction.”

Tucked into President Donald Trump’s 2025 tax bill, this provision is designed to give retirees and older taxpayers extra relief at filing time. And while the idea of a new deduction sounds simple enough, the tax break has stirred questions about who qualifies and how the deduction works.
