Netherlands favourite makes Cody Gakpo transfer admission following Manchester United 'interest'

Cody Gakpo has been told Liverpool FC are a better fit for his style than Manchester United at this time.

Gakpo, 23, has signed for the Reds this January window despite long-standing interest from Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag identifying him as a possible addition this summer. However, at that stage, United instead opted to recruit Antony with only room in the budget - and squad - for one attacking player.

Since then, Gakpo has underlined his burgeoning reputation at PSV and during the World Cup in Qatar by scoring three goals for the Netherlands in the tournament. United resisted a follow-up move this month due to being well-stocked in his preferred left side position, while Liverpool have paid €42million for his services.

Liverpool pressed forward with interest due to long-term injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.

Speaking to radio station talkSPORT, former Netherlands player Ronald de Boer said: "I think it's important for him. He's better when he starts on the left and comes inside.

"Liverpool plays a little bit like that, I remember [Luis] Diaz playing there, also by the way an exceptional talent. So when he's fit he will have to fight for that spot.

"In the meanwhile, he [Gakpo] can grow in that role. Liverpool needs a player like that on that side at the moment.

"For me, this is the best choice that he could have made at this moment."

Gakpo earned plaudits for his performances at the World Cup where he scored three goals in five appearances as the Netherlands were eliminated by eventual winners Argentina at the quarter-final stage. Before that, he netted a further 15 goals with 18 assists in 29 early-season games for PSV.
