Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming royal drama, 'Scoop,' which is based on Prince Andrew's controversial interview with 'Newsnight' anchor Emily Maitlis. The film features a star-studded cast, with Gillian Anderson portraying Maitlis and Rufus Sewell taking on the role of Prince Andrew.
The interview, which took place in November 2019, garnered widespread criticism for Andrew's responses to questions about his association with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Despite settling a sexual assault suit with Virginia Giuffre, Andrew expressed no remorse for his friendship with Epstein and offered implausible explanations for his actions.
Following the interview, Prince Andrew faced significant backlash, leading him to step back from his public duties. Ultimately, Queen Elizabeth II stripped him of his military titles and patronages.
The film is based on a book titled 'Scoops,' written by Sam McAlister, the 'Newsnight' producer who secured the interview with Prince Andrew. Billie Piper stars as McAlister in the film, which promises to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the controversial interview.
In addition to 'Scoop,' another adaptation of the interview is in the works. Emily Maitlis is collaborating with Blueprint Pictures to develop a separate project for Amazon, featuring Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson.
'Scoop' is set to premiere on Netflix on April 5, offering viewers a dramatic retelling of one of the most infamous royal interviews in recent memory.
