Netflix's The Watcher and Monster anthology renewed for a second season

Netflix appears to be turning its fortunes around - and it's all thanks to the runaway success of its true crime shows.

The Watcher is coming back for a second season while Monster will again rear its ugly head as an anthology series with two new instalments.

The extraordinarily creepy Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was a massive triumph, racking up 856.2 million hours within the first 28 days of its release. It went on to become Netflix's second most popular English TV season behind global phenomenon Stranger Things

Its unflinching portrayal of the notorious serial killer is on course to smash a billion view hours this month, according to Netflix.

The eagerly anticipated new instalments in the anthology will zero in on 'other monstrous figures who have impacted society', but you'll have to wait to find out exactly who.

The Watcher centres around the true story of an unsuspecting New Jersey family who are harassed out of their dream home by a man bombarding them with weird letters.

It quickly garnered more than 340 million hours watched since its release on October 13 - and still climbing.

When future episodes of Monster and season two of The Watcher will land is still up in the air - but watch this space.

Renewed interest in Dahmer

Notorious killer Jeffrey Dahmer carried out his reign of terror between 1978 and 1991.

He murdered 17 men in Wisconsin and Ohio before eventually being convicted in 1992. Two years later he was murdered at the age of 34.

Netflix describes the series as one that 'exposes these unconscionable crimes, centred around the underserved victims and their communities impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade'.

Runaway success stories

"Audiences can't take their eyes off 'Monster' and 'The Watcher,'' Netflix's head of global TV Bela Bajaria told Variety.

"The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on 'Monster' along with Eric Newman on 'The Watcher' are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan's distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the 'Monster' and 'Watcher' universes".

And Netflix viewers will be delighted to get their nerves on edge once again with a second season of The Watcher.

The Watcher

The unsettling seven-parter follows married fifty-somethings Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as they settle into their new house in New Jersey suburb Wesfield. Unfortunately it isn't long before an unhinged person sends them threatening letters ordering them to leave.

The Watcher is based on a true story about a couple called Derek and Maria Broaddus, who were stalked by an unidentified person back in 2014.

Over the space of nine months, the titular Watcher sent four odd notes to the home, informing them he had been 'watching the house for decades'.

The man threatened the Broaddus and their children, writing in one distressing note: 'It has been years and years since the young blood ruled the hallways of the house. Have you found all of the secrets it holds yet?

'Will the young blood play in the basement? Or are they too afraid to go down there alone?

'I would [be] very afraid if I were them. It is far away from the rest of the house. If you were upstairs you would never hear them scream.'

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Broaddus family swiftly put the home back on the market and eventually sold it, but despite a lengthy investigation, the identity of The Watcher is still unknown.

Many people who live in the town are still scared to go anywhere near the property - with one resident saying that many moved away from the area out of fears about the building's dark history.

'There was always talk about the house. I’m sure people decided to move at least out of that area,' resident Ralph Bencivenga told The New York Post recently.

'It was kind of freaky. If you know Westfield, it’s more of a quiet town, more family oriented. When that story came out, it definitely struck people.'

'That area where it happened is a really beautiful area. It’s not too far from schools. It was a weird situation.'

Netflix comeback

The success of big-hitters such as Stranger Things and Dahmer have helped the embattled streaming giant make an unexpected comeback in the third quarter of this year.

Netflix executives said the platform added 2.4million subscribers between July 1 and September 30 after two consecutive quarters losing subscribers.

Earlier this year around 206,000 households canned their Netflix subscription between April and June, which saw the streamer's UK customer base dropping from 17.29m to 17.08m.
