Netflix is gearing up to release its next instalment in the Bridgerton series. The hotly anticipated Queen Charlotte – a spin-off from the hit period drama – will drop later this month.
The prequel series centres on the real-life queen decades before she became the royal seen in the main Bridgerton series. Queen Charlotte is created, co-written and co-produced by Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal showrunner Shonda Rhimes and forms part of her multi-year deal with the streaming giant.
Speaking to Netflix Tudum ahead of the show’s launch, Rhimes promised “power” and “real love” will rule when Queen Charlotte premieres. She explained that the series asks, “How do you survive a world in which you have no power?”

In the second season of Bridgerton, viewers were offered a glimpse of Charlotte and her husband King George’s love story, now fans will go back to explore their romance and uncover their royal secrets. What is Queen Charlotte about?
The new limited series is billed as a “Bridgerton-verse prequel” that tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton. The series introduces a young Charlotte, who is only starting to understand her power – and the meaning of love.
Viewers meet Charlotte as she embarks on her life-changing marriage with King George that fans caught a glimpse of in Bridgerton season two. And while Queen Charlotte is dedicated to unraveling the past and exploring the couple’s early romance, it will also give fans a peek into the present-day lives of the Bridgerton cohort ahead of the show’s upcoming third season.

Who is in Queen Charlotte?
The new drama features an all-new cast as high society’s upper echelon, alongside several familiar faces reprising their roles from the main series. The titular Queen is played by 21-year-old screen and stage actress India Amarteifio, who viewers may recognise as Lizzie from Sex Education or the Sky sci-fi series The Midwich Cuckoos.
The Sandman actor Corey Mylchreest plays young King George III, marking his first leading role. He stars alongside relative newcomer Connie Jenkins-Greig as young Violet Ledger.
Arsema Thomas will play the young Lady Danbury, marking the American-born actress’ second major role following 2022 romance film Redeeming Love. Game of Thrones star Michelle Fairley takes on the role of Princess Augusta while Dancing on the Edge and Rogue One actor Richard Cunningham will play Lord Bute.
Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh and Ruth Gemmell also appear as their respective Bridgerton characters Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury and Bridgerton family matriarch Lady Violet Bridgerton. Hugh Sachs also returns as Brimsley, Queen Charlotte’s butler, while Harry Potter and the Cursed Child actor Sam Clemmett plays young Brimsley.

When is Queen Charlotte released?
Netflix revealed the premiere date for Queen Charlotte during a Valentine’s Day panel, confirming that all six episodes will drop on the same day. The limited series will be available to stream from Thursday, May 4, at 8am.
