Netflix plans for World Cup WAGs documentary given short shrift by England camp

Harry Kane has insisted England’s players would find a WAGs documentary a complete turn-off.

Netflix are reported to be keen to make a film about England stars’ wives and girlfriends in Qatar this winter, although no approach has been made to the Football Association.

The streaming service’s interest may have been peaked by the ongoing legal case between Colleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy and the WAGs were front page news in the 2006 World Cup. But England captain Kane echoed Gareth Southgate’s opposition to any revival of the showbiz days when the WAGs got as much coverage as the team.

Kane said: “I think Gareth hit the nail on the head. We’ve created this really good environment where friends and family, girlfriends and wives have been part of the team and the group, especially when we’ve been away.

“Last summer was a bit different obviously, but I’ve not been contacted about my wife (being involved) and she hasn’t, so I’m not sure too whose has. We want to focus on the World Cup and we don’t want any distraction from that.”

Southgate added: “It’s not my cup of tea, really. I’d be surprised if the group of players we’ve got would have an interest in that. Because they’ve wanted to focus on football.

“The focus in Russia and last summer was all about the players and everything that they do. We’ve never had any issues. We like to involve the families.

“I actually think the term wags is quite disrespectful, it’s their partners and family. I don’t like the term. We want them to feel welcome and we invited them into the hotel when we could in Russia. Mums, dads and kids.

“It’s a great feeling when you’ve the kids in especially. It changes the dynamic of the hotel. We couldn’t do that last year because of Covid. It’s one big family and I think everyone recognises that part of what we do has been very good over the last couple of years.”
