Netflix new releases — 7 shows and movies you need to stream this week (Jan. 5-11)

(L to R) Jon Bernthal as Detective Jack Harper and Tessa Thompson as Anna in episode 101 of "His and Hers.".

Netflix is adding just 12 new shows and movies to its streaming service this week. Despite the relatively small number of new additions, though, we're getting a pair of heavy hitters. At the top of the list is "His and Hers," a new drama series starring a pair of heavy hitters in their own right: Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal.

But if a dark twisted tale isn't your speed, don't worry. "People We Meet on Vacation" is a new romantic comedy movie based on a beloved novel of the same name. It will still have you feeling things, but you'll at least be happy about it.

For more to watch, read on for all of my top picks, a full list of everything new on Netflix this week and the scoop on what's leaving Netflix this week. If you need more, check out our recap of the best Netflix movies from 2025.

New on Netflix this week: Top picks

'His and Hers'

"His and Hers" stars Tessa Thompson as Anna, a recluse living in Atlanta, Georgia. She's tossed aside her friends, her career as a TV news anchor and even her husband to stay out of the public eye. But a murder in Dahlonega, her rural hometown in north Georgia, has her suddenly ready to ditch her reclusive lifestyle to dive into this case and get some answers.

Overseeing the investigation is Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), and when Anna arrives on the crime scene, it becomes clear that it's not just the case that brings Anna to Dahlonega. Jack, it turns out, is her estranged husband and he's as shocked as anyone to see Anna suddenly involved in this murder investigation. In fact, he's not above treating her as a person of interest, because it's so suspicious to see her there.

So, did one of these two have something to do with this gruesome crime? Or are they about to uncover something bigger than their broken marriage? You'll have to watch "His and Hers" to find out.

'People We Meet on Vacation'

"People We Meet on Vacation" is based on the hit 2021 novel of the same name by Emily Henry. It stars Emily Bader as Poppy, a free-spirited girl whose best friend is the far more straight-laced Alex (Tom Blyth). Despite the unlikely pairing, these two prove opposites attract. They've been best friends forever, despite living in different cities. They even manage to go on a trip every summer, no matter what.

Turns out opposites might really attract, though, because Poppy ultimately catches feelings for Alex, despite protesting to everyone around her to the contrary. Now, she has to find a way to keep her best friend and not keep her feelings hidden any longer.

After watching the trailer, I can say that this romantic comedy feels made for Netflix. A story about two young, attractive people realizing they may be made for each other, but there's drama and a Robyn soundtrack along the way? Feels like a Netflix rom-com to me.

'Love Is Blind: Germany' season 2

"Love is Blind" is probably one of the most recognizable Netflix franchises at this point. In this dating reality competition, the contestants aren't allowed to see their potential match until they've already agreed to marry each other. It's such a successful formula, at least in terms of being entertaining, that the show has now spread to multiple countries.

One spinoff that's found success? "Love is Blind: Germany," which returns this week for season 2. This season, 15 men and 15 women enter the pods in search of love. Will any of them find their happily ever after? Based on last season, there's about a 13% chance any of these couples will go the distance; only one couple from season 1 got married, though another is still together.

'Unlocked: A Jail Experiment' season 2

The U.S. prison system is not known for giving its inmates leeway within the prison walls. Solitary confinement isn't uncommon, and efforts to rehabilitate rather than incarcerate are few and far between.

"Unlocked: A Jail Experiment" is one such attempt at rehabilitation, though. In this reality series, the warden and his guards take a step back, allowing the inmates to run the asylum, with the hope that they'll take on responsibilities and work to better themselves individually and as a unit. Season 1 was set in an Arkansas jail, but in season 2, we're headed to Arizona, where the Pinal County sheriff has put together a group of 10 men he thinks have a shot at making this experiment a success.

'Marcello Hernández: American Boy'

Marcello Hernández has been on "Saturday Night Live" since 2022, establishing a few well-known characters in that time. There's The Movie Guy, where Hernández dresses like a doorman from a swanky hotel and talks to Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost about a bunch of movies he's never seen. There's also Domingo, a singing Latin doctor who's involved with some women that he probably shouldn't be.

But in "Marcello Hernández: American Boy," the "SNL" star is ditching the sketches for stand-up in his first comedy special. In this hour-long special, Hernández dives into his Latino roots, spills the tea on his family's unhinged dance-offs and drops a few of his mom's unforgettable life lessons.

'Monday Night Raw: 2026' (Netflix live event)

"WWE Raw" is one of the wrestling empire's two weekly shows. Every Monday, fans of spandex and suplex alike tune in to watch wrestling's biggest stars face off against each other in the ring. There's drama, trash talking, shocking moments and knock-down drag-out fights. In short, it's a wrestling fan's dream and better than any soap opera you're watching

This week, it's the first "Raw" of the new year, as WWE heads to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Tune in live at 8 p.m. to see who faces off in the ring, who makes an unexpected appearance to stun the crowd and if anyone can kick off the year by stealing a WWE title.

Watch it live on Netflix tonight at 8 p.m. ET

'Alpha Males' season 4

The series follows four male friends: Santi (Gorka Otxoa), Luis (Fele Martínez), Pedro (Fernando Gil) and Raúl (Raúl Tejón). These four are in their 40s and are discovering that the privilege they enjoyed as younger men is disappearing as societal change empowers women. This forces them to adapt, and that doesn't always go smoothly.

In the first season, the group took a course on deconstructing masculinity, forcing them to examine how their macho preconceptions affect their perceptions. In season 4, the struggle to own their masculinity while being a part of a more egalitarian society continues as the friends grapple with fatherhood, faith ... and AI lovers.
