The One Piece anime remake has set a 2027 release window as Netflix confirms it's avoiding a Steel Ball Run-style disaster.
As confirmed by the streamer, the Wit-produced series will premiere in February 2027, taking us through the first 50 chapters of Eiichiro Oda's manga and up to Luffy's meeting with Sanji.
Even better, we're getting seven episodes (totalling around 300 episodes) from the adaptation of the East Blue arc dropping as a batch release, meaning Netflix has learned all the right lessons from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run.
There, fans were bemused by a release schedule that saw one bumper-length premiere episode followed by weeks of radio silence and, finally, confirmation that new episodes would arrive in the fall.
As a taster, The One Piece has released concept art (which you can see above) that features series protagonist Luffy in humble beginnings at Windmill Village.
Previously, the head of Wit Studio had spoken out about The One Piece remake project, urging his team to remake Oda's masterpiece for a new generation.
"The reason we decided to remake One Piece is something Eiichiro Oda said," Wit's George Wada revealed in an interview with Ai Show's now-deleted video (via translations from Anime Hunch and ComicBook).
"He said that One Piece has become very long and full of details, since it started so long ago. The new generation watching modern productions may not feel the same excitement towards the old animation. He felt a bit of regret about that and wanted the new generation to know and follow the story. That motivated me to remake this great story using modern techniques suitable for today’s audience."
2027, then, is the year of One Piece on Netflix. Alongside The One Piece remake, the live-action One Piece season 3 is also setting sail for our streaming shores next year. Full steam ahead!
