‘Your Monster’ is charming, funny, and just a little terrifying
“Your Monster” is certainly not what I expected, and I’m not sure if that’s because I avoided the trailers or because it flicks between multiple genres in a masterful way. It’s an impressive movie, to say the least, and seems destined for cult classic status. Many movies have centered on a woman falling for some kind of creature, but here, “Your Monster” leans into the hairier side of romance, with lead character Laura finding herself enamored with a beast living in her closet. Surprisingly, it’s incredibly charming, made even better by the fact that the “monster” isn’t the villain but an ordinary human man taking the form of Laura’s self-centered ex.
A lot of “Your Monster” shouldn’t work, yet the way the first half plays out like a rom-com and the second half suddenly veers into horror somehow feels completely natural. It all comes down to Laura’s simmering rage, which builds from the very start, enough to make you root for her revenge and perfectly set up the dark thrills that follow. Lindy clearly has a real knack for portraying female anger, made even more resonant knowing the story is loosely inspired by her own life, including a horrible breakup she experienced.
Music also plays a big role in “Your Monster,” with the songs from the fictional musical gradually taking on meaning for both the characters and the audience. This builds throughout the film, culminating in the final number (a tune that lingered in my mind) delivered in a thrilling, powerful performance that truly pays off. The movie also works really well as a magical realism story with strong elements of romance and comedy. It’s a feel-good flick that’s genuinely funny while also surprisingly emotional, anchored by the charming performances of Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey.
“Your Monster” should definitely be on your Valentine’s watchlist this weekend. You don’t need to take my word for it either, since it earned a solid 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s critics consensus reads: “A wickedly delightful genre mashup led by Melissa Barrera, Your Monster is pleasantly packed with songs, guts, and heart.” If you’re looking for a romantic comedy that stands out from the usual fare, this is the one to stream.
