Netflix and SEGA are teaming up on a new wave of adaptations pulled straight from the game publisher's decades-long catalog. The partnership spans multiple titles and formats, giving fans of very different SEGA franchises something to look forward to at once.
Netflix, SEGA Announce New Game-to-Movie Adaptations
Netflix and SEGA announced a new collaboration bringing several SEGA properties to the streaming platform, starting with a feature adaptation of "Crazy Taxi" alongside projects tied to "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Stranger Than Heaven.
Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix, said great games already come with everything an adaptation needs, since they already have characters people love, worlds fans know by heart, and communities that show up.
He added that working across "Crazy Taxi," "Sonic," and "Stranger Than Heaven" lets Netflix pull from three completely different eras of SEGA's library at once, celebrating what longtime fans already love while bringing those worlds to new audiences.
'Crazy Taxi' Is Getting Its Own Movie
The "Crazy Taxi" adaptation will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind the 2025 reboot of "The Naked Gun." Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, the same producers behind the "Sonic" film franchise, are attached to produce.
Moritz and Ascher said the project is being made for anyone who has spent hours behind the wheel of a yellow cab in the original Dreamcast game, blasting music while smashing through the city just to reach the next fare.
"Crazy Taxi" first launched as an arcade release back in 1999, putting players behind the wheel of a reckless cab driver racing against the clock through chaotic city streets, and the franchise is set to continue with "Crazy Taxi: World Tour" releasing in 2027.
'Stranger Than Heaven' Is Set to Go Live
"Stranger Than Heaven" is also being adapted into a live-action film, based on the game from RGG Studio, the same team behind the "Like a Dragon" and "Yakuza" series.
The story follows a foreigner navigating early 20th-century Japan, rising from a penniless outsider into a feared yakuza figure and later an entertainment tycoon, all while balancing honor and betrayal against the backdrop of a rapidly changing nation.
Toru Nakahara, Head Producer at SEGA, described the upcoming slate as cute yet cool for "Sonic," hilariously chaotic for "Crazy Taxi," and a badass action drama for "Stranger Than Heaven." Full story and casting details for the live-action film remain under wraps for now.
Other Netflix and SEGA Collaboration
Alongside the two films, Netflix and SEGA are also developing a new animated "Sonic" series aimed at an upper preschool audience, a notably younger crowd than the franchise typically targets.
The show is being built as a high-energy, comedic series that still carries emotional weight, giving young viewers a bit of edge and attitude alongside plenty of team spirit. This follows three seasons of "Sonic Prime," which are already available to stream on Netflix.
These new SEGA titles add to Netflix's growing slate of video game-based projects, which already includes a live-action "Assassin's Creed" series, a live-action "Gears of War" film, animated adaptations of "Minecraft," "Magic: The Gathering," and "Clash of Clans," along with returning seasons of "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" and "Splinter Cell: Deathwatch."
