Ever since BBC’s hit series Luther wrapped up after its fifth season in 2019, fans of the show have been calling for more. Now, their prayers have been answered, as Netflix has confirmed the popular detective is getting his own film, which lands on the streaming platform next year.
Hollywood star Idris Elba teased fans on social media earlier this month with a post confirming the character's return, and now Netflix has revealed more titillating details about the upcoming production – as well as some first-look snaps. The streaming giant has promised the spin-off will be a “gritty [and] epic continuation of the award-winning television saga.”
Speaking to LadBible in September, Elba revealed the filming had wrapped, and said the cast and crew were “really proud of it.” He added: “The world of Luther as a television show and film is similar, but the film has [huge] scale.

Who are the cast?
It’s no surprise that leading man Idris Elba is back to front the film as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, following his successful five-season run. The London-born star gained global recognition for his role as Stringer Bell in HBO’s crime drama The Wire, and has since appeared in many blockbusters throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond.
Several new cast members have also been confirmed in as yet unnamed roles, the first of which is acclaimed British actress Cynthia Erivo. The Oscar-nominated actress is best known for portraying American abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the 2019 biopic Harriet, as well as her two-year stint in the Broadway production of The Color Purple.
She stars alongside Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis, who is reported to be filling the role of the film’s villain. Serkis rose to prominence following his turn as Gollum in the Middle-Earth trilogy, and went on to play many performance capture roles including the ape Caesar in the Planet of Apes reboot trilogy, and most recently starred as Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred in The Batman.
Returning to the Luther franchise is Dermot Crowley, who reprises his role as DSU Martin Schenk.
When is Luther: The Fallen Sun released?
Netflix is yet to reveal the exact date of Luther’s return, but confirmed the film will be available to stream sometime in March 2023.
