We haven’t even discovered all the mysteries of the Upside Down yet and already there’s talk of a Stranger Things spinoff, according to Netflix boss Ted Sarandos.
The CEO of the streaming service spoke of the future of the beloved sci-fi show while attending its season five premiere in London, teasing to fans that “the world of Hawkins, Indiana and the Upside Down is not over”.
Sarandos stopped short of revealing further details (blasphemy!), but sources have claimed there’s “been talks of a live-action spin-off as well as another animated project”.
The mysterious spinoff will add to the broader world created outside of Stranger Things’ main show, with the series already spawning a Broadway play titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow and upcoming cartoon called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
That animation will be set between seasons two and three of the main series and will be voiced by an entirely new cast.
There are also a stack of officially licensed Stranger Things novels expanding the universe, including the most recently announced Stranger Things: One Way or Another, which follows Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dye) as she chases a brand new mystery.
What will the Stranger Things spinoff be about?
While those offshoot projects have been confirmed, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer are still keeping the main Stranger Things spinoff very close to their chests.
Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV, the Duffers said they are “working on a spin-off” that “doesn’t involve any of the characters or Hawkins”, which instantly rules out a neat little after-hours series where the original gang just hangs out at Family Video.
Matt went further, explaining that the Stranger Things spinoff “doesn’t involve any of the characters or Hawkins. Or even the Upside Down. Or the 80s. So it’s very, very different, but also very much Stranger Things”, so whatever it is, it won’t just be season six with a wig on.
Meanwhile, on on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the creators said: “The most important connective tissue I would say is the storytelling sensibility of it. There is story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”
“It will be 1000 per cent different [to the OG series],” they added.
When will the Stranger Things spinoff be released?
There’s no confirmed release date for the live-action Stranger Things spinoff just yet, and the streamer hasn’t announced when production will properly kick off.
With the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 on the way and the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow still running overseas, the live-action Stranger Things spinoff looks like more of a long game than something dropping the minute the finale credits roll.
For now, Netflix’s calendar is dominated by the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, with Volume 1 already out, more episodes arriving on December 26 and the finale landing on January 1, so the spinoff is very much a “next era” problem.
We don’t know any other deets about the cast or plot just yet, but we at least have Volume 1 of the fifth and final season to dig into in the meantime.
ICYMI, the first three episodes of that season landed in November, and they’re chock-full of bombshell reveals and major twists, with audience and critics agreeing it is a smash hit.
The next batch of episodes will drop on December 26, followed by the finale on January 1 in Australia. If you’re preemptively mourning Stranger Things’ conclusion, rest assured we’ll be hearing more from the Upside Down soon enough.
