Netflix axes Yellowstone rival Ransom Canyon after ratings plummet

  • Netflix has cancelled the neo-Western romance series Ransom Canyon after two seasons, just a few months after its second season premiered on 23 July.
  • Billed as Netflix 's answer to Yellowstone and Virgin River, the Texas-set drama starred Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly as members of three competing ranching dynasties fighting over land and power.
  • The decision to end the show follows a sharp decline in ratings, with season two drawing 4.1 million views in its first week, representing a 43 per cent drop compared to season one's opening week.
  • The drama struggled to impress critics from the outset, facing heavy criticism for its dialogue and storyline, with reviewers dismissing it as an unconvincing copycat of successful cowboy dramas.
  • Before the cancellation, lead actress Minka Kelly highlighted Netflix's willingness to address gender pay disparity after she successfully negotiated a significant salary increase to narrow the earnings gap with co-star Josh Duhamel.
