Nepal Police said at least 95 people were killed after a wall of water surged down the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday morning, and hundreds more are unaccounted for in valleys where the roads, bridges and power lines rescuers need are gone.
The toll climbed through the day as reports reached Kathmandu from districts farther downstream, moving from seven confirmed deaths in the early afternoon to 22, then 55, before Reuters and AFP cited local police putting the death toll at 95 by Wednesday evening. "So far 95 deaths have been reported," police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle told AFP, adding that nearly 30 police personnel were among the missing. The Kathmandu Post reported that 32 Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel were out of contact in Timure, near the Chinese border.
