The National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 envisions an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes directly to transforming India sustainably into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society by providing high quality education to all and thereby, making India a global knowledge superpower, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Karisiddappa has said.
Dr. Karisiddappa was delivering the convocation speech during the eighth graduation ceremony at Poojya Doddappa Appa College of Engineering, a government–aided autonomous institution affiliated to VTU.
NEP-2020 aims at promoting student-centric, holistic and multi-disciplinary education systems. He said that VTU has consistently made efforts to effectively implement the NEP-2020 in the engineering curriculum across the State.
VTU is one of the first universities to implement NEP-2020 in the 2021-22 academic year. The university has conducted a series of lectures and workshops to create awareness about the changes made in the curriculum, scheme of learning and examination in line with the objectives of NEP-2020, he added.
The former Director of Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai, Shivaprasad Khened said that any country which excels in its engineering is definitively bound to lead the world and so it is for India, which has a great history of its achievements in the field of science, engineering and technology. There is no dearth of talent and competence in India, but there is a dearth of right ambience and support system for competent people, he added.
He acknowledged the contribution of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, eminent Indian engineer and recipient of the Bharat Ratna. Sir Visvesvaraya has made unprecedented contributions in diverse fields of engineering. He made contributions to several significant technical projects across India. The engineer was known world over for his contribution to harnessing water resources.
Referring to the architecture of industries, irrigation projects and ancient temples, Mr. Khened said that Indians also created enduring architectural constructions that stand testimony to Indian excellence in the field of engineering. Mr. Khened also narrated inspirational stories of great engineers and scientists.
Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society president and PDA College governing body chairman Bheemashankar Bilgundi and PDA College principal S.S. Kalashetty were present.
Certificates, medals
Shivakumar of Mechanical Engineering branch bagged six gold medals in all, followed by Pooja of Electrical and Electronics Engineering with four gold medals. Roopini of Computer Science and Shaikh Abdul Rauf of Civil Branch bagged two gold medals each.
As many as 22 meritorious students were honoured with 32 gold medals for academic performance on the occasion.
As many as 793 students — 664 graduates from 11 departments and 129 post-graduate students — were awarded degrees at the graduation ceremony.
