Neil Warnock breaks silence on Cardiff City job and tells club what they need to do

Neil Warnock has appeared to rule out a return to the Cardiff City dugout and claims he has had no contact with anyone at the club over the vacant manager's position.

The former Bluebirds boss, who steered the club to Premier League promotion in 2018, has been the favourite to take over since Mark Hudson was relieved of his duties following the 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic last Saturday.

However, Warnock, 74, has spoken about the links for the first time on BBC Radio 5Live's show with Adrian Chiles.

When asked about the Bluebirds vacancy, Warnock said: "I think they all talk about you. I've been mentioned in every job going at the minute. I'm retired now! And when I do work, I only work March and April. It's too early for me now, January and February. I only come back for the last 12 or 15 games. It's a bit early for me and I'm enjoying myself now doing other things.

"I enjoy doing my podcasts. I did one last week with Steve Bruce. I've got a few more to do and booked a couple of holidays, which I've wanted to do and you can't do during the season.

"And the pressures, I've not missed that. I did originally because I was really disappointed with the way I left at Middlesbrough, even though I knew the next manager was waiting for a few weeks.

"I've not spoken to anyone there. Everyone thinks it's already cut and dried. No chance. You'll see when they appoint a manager next week. They have got to appoint someone this week or early next week. I imagine that would be the case.

"But if I could help them then I would do. I think what they need is possibly someone football-wise behind the manager, helping the manager, really, because it's a great club."

Warnock, like many, believes the club need more football nous at board level, however getting that over the line has proved a sizeable stumbling block over the years.

Asked whether a director of football job might suit him better now, he replied: "I don't want to do a full-time job at my age. If I could help a younger manager then I would do. I think there's a place for that. But I've not been asked anywhere."
