Neighbours "heard screams" before an attack which has left a man seriously injured in hospital. The incident happened in the Newgate Lane area of Mansfield at around 9.30pm on Monday, July 18 and police cordoned off the road the following day while investigating what happened.
The victim of the attack remains in hospital in a serious condition after suffering a head injury. Detectives believe the 28-year-old victim was attacked after being followed by a group.
Adele Simeon, who lives on Newgate Lane, told Nottinghamshire Live: "I saw all the police outside yesterday, they were here all day. We were surprised that it happened. The police told us they are investigating.

"It looked like it was a group of around 10 or 11, there was quite a lot of them. After it happened we heard screams, but didn't see exactly what happened - then the police came. That's all we know."
One Sandy Lane resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I heard there was a big group of people fighting and one guy got really badly hurt. They blocked the whole road off yesterday, you couldn't get through at all."
Hattie Vince, 33, from Mansfield, said: "I heard about what happened and it sounds pretty shocking, yeah. It must have been bad if police taped this whole thing off. It is a bit rough around here in my opinion."
"I didn't see anything just the police," said another Newgate Lane resident. "There were loads of them. I asked one of them what happened but they wouldn't tell me."
Nottinghamshire Police have launched an appeal for information and asked witnesses to come forward. Detectives believe the 28-year-old victim was attacked after being followed by a group.
Detective Inspector Luke Todd, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Our enquiries are ongoing into this assault, including checking CCTV footage, and we are urging anyone who saw what happened to please get in touch with us.
“We would also like to hear from any drivers who were in the area around this time and who may have captured dash-cam footage of the incident.”
