Neighbours heard 'almighty bang' as house went up in flames

Neighbours reported hearing an ''almighty'' bang followed by flames spilling out of a house window.

A home on Craigside Avenue, in West Derby, caught fire on the evening of Wednesday, December 21. Toni Shield's was out with friends when she rushed home to find her house and her belongings in flames.

The mum-of-two says she has been left ''homeless' and ''everything'' she owns, including Christmas presents have been lost to the fire. Toni said ''My neighbour told me she heard a bang when the windows blew out''.

Police have now sealed off the street and have informed Toni they are unsure if the fire was an electrical fault or arson. An investigation will be carried out today, Thursday 22.

Schoolboys arrested after KFC broken into in middle of the night

Two schoolboys have been arrested after a burglary at KFC.

Officers were called to the fast food restaurant, in Stonedale Retail Park, after security became aware of two people inside the building. Officers arrived at the scene in the early hours of Thursday, December 22, at around 12.55am.

Two schoolboys were caught by police dog Rita following a short foot chase. A 12-year-old boy, from West Derby, and a 13-year-old boy, from Tuebrook were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Family pays tribute to Hillsborough barrister Mark George

The barrister who represented 22 families in the Hillsborough inquiry has passed away.

Mark George's death was announced by his son, Tom, in a moving post on Twitter. Mark died on Tuesday, December, 20 following a short battle with cancer.

Tom's tribute read: ''When he worked on the Hillsborough inquiry he remarked, only half in jest, that it brought together two of his life's greatest passions''. He finished his heartfelt tribute saying ''Rest up, you incredibly smart silly billy'.

The Criminal Bar Association said: ''We are very sad to hear the news of the passing of Mark George KC, Head of Garden Court North Chambers. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, and friends and colleagues''.
