Neighbours concerned Bingham is getting 'too big' as huge new housing estate created

People living in Bingham have voiced concerns that their town is getting 'too big' as a huge new development on the outskirts gathers pace. There will eventually be more than 1,000 houses at the massive Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes development that is bordered by the A52 and Chapel Lane.

A new leisure centre called Bingham Arena, set to include two swimming pools, is also being built nearby to serve the increasing population. For some who already live in Bingham, though, there are some worries that the town may struggle to cope with its increasing population.

Roy Yates, 72, told Nottinghamshire Live: "They are putting houses up everywhere, not just in Bingham. I don't think there's much of a plan, it's just 'let's build all of these houses'. We have some great shops here but it's not a massive place, we're not a West Bridgford or anything like that. I just hope the place isn't overrun because I wouldn't like it to be too busy here, it would lose a bit of its appeal."

June and Tony Wrigley have lived in Bingham for the past 22 years, and said: "It's getting too big - facilities need to be the priority for Bingham. Getting a doctor's appointment as it is is a nightmare. Parking is already a big issue and that is only going to get worse. You have the new leisure centre coming along as well, so more and more people are going to be coming here."

Not everyone agrees that all this change will be bad for Bingham, though - with others saying it is an "exciting" time to live in the town as the new leisure centre nears completion. The adjacent Bingham Enterprise Centre will host 12 office lets for small and growing businesses over two floors that the authority says could create up to 90 jobs.

One Bingham resident, who has lived in the town for more than 30 years and wished to remain anonymous, said: "The problem is that people do need somewhere to live. I can bet that pretty much every single one of those houses will get sold.

"I'm not surprised people want to move here - it's lovely. You have pretty much everything here and you're also not too far away from West Bridgford, even the city centre - you have Grantham if you go the other way too. People never like change but I think we should be welcoming people here with open arms if we can."
