Neighbours bosses 'leaving door open for the future' as show is axed after 37 years

Neighbours bosses are "leaving the door open" for the show to have a future - despite its axe.

The Australian soap - broadcasted in the UK on Channel 5 - will air its final episodes later this year after 37 years. Fans - and bosses - had hoped the show could be saved but Fremantle Media failed to secure another home for the popular soap.

Now, executive producer Jason Herbison has spoken up on the show's final storylines, as it prepares to air its final scenes in the summer - with bosses keen to not close the show off from having a future, if one is available one day.

"Ramsay Street is eternal and I like to think it will live on in the hearts and minds of the viewers, long after the final scene. I would never, ever blow it up," he explained to TV Tonight.

"The ending will be a celebration of the past and the present, with the door very much left open for a future."

Herbison is also working on bringing some of the biggest stars back to the show - including Kylie Minogue.

He added: "One of my great joys has been to bring back many former characters in recent years, which is something the show seemed reluctant to do prior. I'm definitely hoping some of these faces return along with others we haven't been able to lure back until now.

"I feel very strongly that the end must equally be a celebration of the current cast. Karl, Susan, Toadie and Paul have earned a very rightful place, front and centre."

And asked specifically about Kylie's return, he shared: "I'm doing everything you'd expect me to be doing!"

A spokesperson confirmed the show's axe in a poignant message on Twitter : "We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June.

"Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team.

Paying tribute to the fans, they added: "We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours."
