Twinkling Christmas lights are a beautiful sight - and lots of people love to adorn their houses with decorations during the festive season. Sometimes the whole community will even get involved, though it is more common to see individual displays.
Regardless, most people tend to agree it comes down to personal choice. Well, one person who would likely disagree hit out at their neighbour for not putting up Christmas lights outside their home.
The festive fan took it upon themselves to write to another resident on their street, slamming the "Grinch" in an anonymous letter. However, people were quick to accuse the author of being the bad neighbour after seeing their strongly-worded letter.
Reportedly posted to Facebook before it was widely shared on Reddit and Twitter, the note found in a letterbox read: "Congratulations!! You have won the Humbug award!!!! Because you have chosen to be a Grinch, and not put up Christmas lights you have disappointed all the children, young, and old in your community!
"LED lights are inexpensive to run and can be purchased even in second hand stores for reasonable prices! They can last years! I'm sure cost is not an issue and it is more about being too busy with your devices than anything else! Do you remember when you were a child and you saw all the Christmas lights on your street? What happened?
"Next year do better and bring a smile to those in need... but remember you still have time. It only takes a little effort to make a big difference. Love strong and love long! Putting lights up for other faiths counts too! Why not show your pride with colour! Happy Holidays!!"
In response, shocked readers were quick to share their disgust. One social media user said: "This enrages me, to no end." Another asked: "Who wrote this mess?" And someone else joked: "If I had planned to put on decorations and got a letter like this I would put my Halloween decorations back up."
Meanwhile, other commenters pointed out there's a range of reasons why someone may not want to or may not be able to decorate, perhaps due to age, religion or disability.
Another viewer wrote: "My mom passed away the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 2010. I barely felt like putting up a tree, I definitely didn't put up lights. If I'd gotten a letter like that, I would have had a breakdown. So it's not even about religion. You just don't know what people are going through."
