'Neglected' dog suspected to have been used for breeding and then dumped near Northumberland village

A neglected dog is suspected to have been 'used for breeding and then dumped' near a village in Northumberland.

The female Cavalier King Charles Cocker Spaniel was found abandoned just outside of Mitford near Morpeth. She was underweight, in poor physical condition and had been used for breeding.

The pet was picked up by a member of the public on the B6343 between Mitford and the A1 bridge at around 8pm on Sunday night. Her micro-chip details were out of date.

She was taken by an Animal Welfare Officer from Northumberland County Council to Berwick Animal Rescue Kennels where she is being cared for and nursed back to health.

An animal welfare officer from the local authority said: "This dog has been neglected and is in extremely poor condition. Someone somewhere knows who she belongs to.

"We believe she has been used for breeding and then dumped and if this is the case we want to get to the bottom of it and bring the person responsible to account.

"There are reports of a vehicle acting suspiciously in the area at that time so we are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has dash cam footage from their cars which may be able to shed some light on this."

Anyone with information, no matter how small, has been asked to contact the Animal Welfare Team on 0345 600 6400. They can also email the team at Animal.Welfare@northumberland.gov.uk.
