Nebraska Volleyball Breaks World Record With Match in Football Stadium

The Nebraska women’s volleyball team set a world record with its astonishing attendance numbers during Wednesday’s doubleheader at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

92,003 fans were recorded to have attended the games at the Sea of Red, a world record for the most fans to ever attend a women's sporting event, the university announced Wednesday.

Their attendance tally was 355 people more than the previous world record, 91,648, which was set during FC Barcelona’s Champions League soccer match against Wolfsburg at Camp Nou in March of 2022.

The attendance exceeds the official maximum capacity at Memorial Stadium, which typically seats just over 83,000. Seats were set up on the field in order to get more fans in for the volleyball match.

The Memorial Stadium attendance record previously stood at 91,585, and the previous U.S. attendance record for a women’s sporting event was 90,185 for the World Cup soccer final between the USWNT and China at the Rose Bowl in 1999, per The Associated Press.

Additionally, the previous record for any NCAA volleyball match stood at 18,755 prior to Wednesday night, a figure the Cornhuskers shattered nearly five times over.

Nebraska’s women’s volleyball program has sold out 306 consecutive matches, and fans turned up in monumental numbers for the showdown on Wednesday evening, making history in the process.
