Neat car tricks to spring clean your motor

MOTORISTS are being given expert tips on the dos and don’ts of spring cleaning their cars.

Many Scots will be keen to use the Easter holidays to deep clean vehicles after the build-up of grime from wintry roads. And car servicing specialist MotorEasy has identified common techniques to avoid as they can cause damage that costs hundreds of pounds to fix.

Firstly, don’t be tempted to use kitchen washing-up liquid as a substitute for car shampoo because it risks stripping the wax and oils that protect the paintwork and can cause premature fading.

Also, avoid using a harsh scrubbing product to remove stubborn dried dirt and be aware that using a towel to dry the car can move muck around the surface, causing scratches to the paintjob.

You should also never wash your car on a hot day as the heat will quickly dry any soap and water applied, causing water spots. So either carry out the task in the shade or keep the surface cool by applying cold water regularly during the process.

When cleaning car seats, don’t use household disinfectant such as bleach as this will ruin the finish of most materials if used neat and directly.

For cloth upholstery, vacuum any debris and spray a solution of hot water, white vinegar and a dash of washing up liquid to scrub into the material with a soft brush for a refresh.

The same solution can also be used to clean leather seats, but avoid soaking them completely, and leave to dry naturally. It’s best to then apply a specialised leather conditioner.

The MotorEasy team also reckons it might be wise to clean wheels and tyres, often the dirtiest part of a vehicle, first – to avoid splashing dirt on to nearby surfaces you might have already washed.

Boss Duncan McClure-Fisher said: “Always use appropriate cleaning products to avoid ruining upholstery or paintwork, which can be costly to repair. Regular maintenance will help avoid issues that may require specialist attention.”

Meanwhile, experts at LeaseElectricCar.co.uk are providing tips on how to achieve the scratch-free, professional car-wash shine at home.

Its consultants reckon if you can start by using a pressure washer to remove dirt then it is best to start at the top and work your way down.

You must then be sure to get into all areas, including the undersides of the door sills and bumpers, by applying specialist soap for a few minutes to safely loosen muck before then washing it off.

Motorists should use oil-based products to remove stubborn stains created by the likes of tree sap but it is important to always give the area a polish with a clean cloth afterwards.

When it comes to shampooing the car, it’s best to use microfibre washing mitts as grime caught in traditional sponges can damage the paintwork. It’s also sensible to work on one panel at a time to prevent spreading any residual dirt.

Special alloy cleaners provide a quick and easy way to get the shine back to your wheels, while buffing the vehicle with a microfibre cloth will prevent water marks and streaks.

Finally, you should grab a clean microfibre cloth and a glass cleaner to buff up all windows and leave the car with an impressive shine.

A LeaseElectricCar.co.uk spokesperson said: “Get the right tools in and you will save money over time and still manage to achieve that car wash glow.”

And StressFreeCarRental.com has advice for family drivers on keeping cabins clean and kids happy at the same time.

Firstly, try to keep eating food away from the car but if snacks are needed then make sure they can be easily cleaned up, with greasy items a no-go. Avoid fizzy drinks that leave sticky marks if spilled and stick to water.

Get your children to remove muddy footwear before getting into the car and put boots or shoes in spare bags or on plastic sheeting in the boot.

Similarly, balls and toys played with in the park or at the beach should be stored in a box in the boot. And inexpensive rubber mats are best for the floor areas as dirt can be easily shaken off after each trip.

Keep rubbish to a minimum by always having a bin bag on hand for youngsters to throw in any empty bottles, wrappers and food waste rather than chucking it on the floor.

If the kids are about to get in the car soaking wet, sit them on some plastic bags to keep the seats dry and prevent damp smells. After every journey, empty the car of toys, food and any rubbish. Keep on top of it and it will never become an issue again.

A StressFreeCarRental.com spokesperson said: “Travelling with children can create some of the best memories but it can also often lead to a very messy car. Our tips are all very straightforward and quick for busy parents to do during and after any trip out.”
