An historic former Nottingham bank could become a pizzeria after a bar scheme was scrapped. A new Naples-inspired pizza restaurant could be coming to Nottingham city centre, after plans for Rudy's to set up in the old Midland Bank on Victoria Street were submitted to Nottingham City Council.
The chain also has branches in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, and Soho. The grade II listed building, which was built in 1895, has been vacant since French connection left it in 2019.
An application was made to change the unit into a bar in 2022, however interest ultimately fell away due to the costs involved in refurbishing the premises and the space not suiting the operator. The new applicant explained the previous application included "more intrusive works" to the listed building, such as a mezzanine floor and new staircase through the original ceiling, as well as some of the original panelling being covered up.

Planning agents for the prospective operator have said the new plan is "far less obtrusive", including minimal works to the listed building in line with the operator's minimalistic and open plan concept. The physical works within the basement would be kept to an "absolute minimum", consisting of just a few partition walls between the existing vaults so the vacant space can be converted into customer toilets.
The ground floor will be used as the pizza preparation area, servery, bar and customer seating areas. The kitchen and bar areas have been specifically laid out to "ensure the grandeur of the former bank hall can be truly celebrated" according to the applicant, with the seating allowing people to see the bespoke original detailing and six central granite columns.
The planners behind the new proposal have said the works are very minor in nature, but would ensure the applicant can provide a pizza oven and servery in the centre of the floor. It was added the designs would "ensure the character of the building is retained whilst, importantly, giving it a viable use for the future", adding to the local economy.
In a planning document, Firstplan on behalf of applicant Mission Mars Ltd, said: "In conclusion, we consider the proposals put forward by this listed building are entirely appropriate to the significance of the host listed building and wider Conservation Area, and represents a significant investment on the part of our client. They will enable them to take occupation of this vacant listed building and ensure its long term viability.
"Indeed, the proposals are in compliance with the Council’s policies and guidance on design, amenity and conservation area management. They will bring a reputable and popular operator to the area, therefore enhancing the vitality of the wider area." The planning application is pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
