GUWAHATI The Mizo National Front (MNF), a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner, has decided to back the no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition alliance in Parliament against the BJP-led government at the Centre.
Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha member C. Lalrosanga told journalists on August 10 that he would support the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) during the voting because of the Centre’s poor handling of the Manipur situation and its push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
However, he later said that though he supported the no-trust motion, he did not raise his hand when the voting took place.
“We are extremely unhappy with the way the BJP government has dealt with the situation in Manipur, where our brothers and sisters are badly affected and in distress,” he said earlier. The MNF, which rules Mizoram, is also against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he said.
However, he later said that though he supported the no-trust motion, he did not raise his hand when the voting took place.
The Mizos, who dominate Mizoram, are ethnically related to the Kuki-Zomi people caught in the conflict with the majority Meitei community in Manipur.
Mr. Lalrosanga said the no-confidence motion was discussed with the party leadership, including Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga.
The State’s lone Rajya Sabha member, K. Vanlalvena, has also vowed to oppose the UCC and the Centre’s handling of the Manipur violence in the Upper House.
The two Mizoram MPs had skipped the meeting of their NDA counterparts, which was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Mr. Zoramthanga, also the MNF president, said his party had not taken a call on pulling out of the NDA ahead of the Assembly election scheduled for December. The Mizoram House has 40 seats.
