NBA Draft 2022: Why the Bucks forfeited their second-round pick due to tampering rules violation

The shortened 2020 NBA offseason was a weird one. It was quick and kind of rushed, but big for the Milwaukee Bucks. First, they locked Giannis Antetokounmpo on a huge contract extension. Then, they shipped Eric Bledsoe out of town for Jrue Holiday to form a Bucks Big 3.

As we know by now, that Holiday trade proved pivotal in the Bucks winning that season’s NBA championship. However, what’s forgotten about that offseason is the trade that didn’t happen — the Bogdan Bogdanovic deal to Milwaukee.

The failed sign-and-trade between the Atlanta Hawks and Bucks was bad, but it was later learned that Milwaukee had violated the league’s tampering rules by being in contact with Bogdanovic before legally allowed. The penalty? Milwaukee was stripped of its 2022 second-round pick.

So, if you’re wondering why there are fewer than the usual 60 picks in Thursday’s NBA Draft, now you know why.
