'Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's spirit never faltered despite all the adversities'

For six years Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has dreamed of being freed from her Iranian jail and reunited with her family.

That moment has now come true.

It is hard to comprehend the torment she has endured since she was arrested on trumped-up charges by the Iranian authorities.

Twice she went on hunger strike. Her health suffered. She lost two appeals and had her sentenced increased.

Many would have been broken by this adversity but Nazanin’s spirit never faltered.

It was matched only by the love, tenacity and dedication of her husband Richard who campaigned tirelessly for her release.

They did not deserve to be the pawns in a diplomatic power game between London and Tehran. Nor did they deserve to be let down by Boris Johnson whose blundering prompted Iran to level fresh charges against her.

This story was not destined to have a happy ending. The fact that it does is a testament to their resilience and devotion to each other.

No more delays

Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion has created the worst humanitarian disaster in Europe since the Second World War.

Almost three million Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes as they seek sanctuary from the Russian bombardment.

That number is set to rise as more people flee the besieged cities in Eastern Ukraine.

They are in desperate need of food, clothes and a place to live. The tens of thousands of people who have signed up to the Homes for Ukraine scheme shows that households across Britain are ready to help.

The only thing standing in their way is the Government’s delay in carrying out checks.

Now is the time for compassion, not cold-hearted box ticking and foot dragging.
