National Trust plan to solve major issue at Formby site

Plans have been submitted for an overhaul of a beach car park at a Sefton beauty spot.

The proposals, to transform the car park at Victoria Road in Formby, have been submitted to Sefton Council this week by the National Trust as part of plans to restore the natural sand dune habitat in the area.

Under the scheme, the existing beach car park at Formby beach would be demolished, with nearly 40,000 cubic metres of rubble from the former Harington barracks which lies under the car park removed from the site.

A new car park would then be created further inland, paving the way for sand dune restoration on the site.

Lead ranger for the National Trust’s Formby and Central Lancashire properties Kate Martin said the move would be a "huge step forward".

Ms Martin said: “Areas of naturally shifting sand create special habitats for rare sand dune wildlife, including natterjack toads and sand lizards.

"We also know that natural sand dunes can offer really good protection for coastal communities, acting as a natural sea defence if they’re given the space to shift and change over time."

She added: "The old construction rubble is creating a barrier and stopping natural sand movement" stating that the project will help the National Trust restore the sand dunes at Formby "to their natural state."

This will "re-connect important habitats, creating space for wildlife to thrive."

The proposals were validated by Sefton Council this week and are currently open to comment on the council's planning portal website.
