National media reaction as Newcastle 'dream' once again and ready to 'rampage' after Leicester win

Newcastle United have reached the final four of the League Cup for the first time since 1976 with a quarter-final victory over Leicester City. Dan Burn and Joelinton both scored in the second half to seal a 2-0 home victory over the Foxes on Tuesday night.

It is the latest achievement in what is shaping up to be a memorable first full season for Newcastle under Eddie Howe. The Magpies sit third in the Premier League, and shrugged off the shock FA Cup loss at Sheffield Wednesday to rise to the occasion and beat Leicester three days' later.

Newcastle will learn their semi-final opponents following a draw on Wednesday night, and resume their league campaign with a televised home encounter against Fulham on Sunday afternoon. Here is how the national media reacted to United's quarter-final victory over Leicester.

'Newcastle fans dreaming of title and trophy challenges'

Writing for BBC Sport, Emlyn Begley wrote: "Howe, backed by the club's rich Saudi owners, has got a new generation of Newcastle fans dreaming of title and trophy challenges. The last time they reached a final was in the 1999 FA Cup.

"Their last trophy was the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. You have to go back to 1955 for their last domestic success, the FA Cup. They have only reached the League Cup final once, losing in 1976.

"Since then Oxford United and Luton Town are among the teams to have lifted this trophy. Howe's side - who were back to full strength after the weekend's FA Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday - were wonderful from the off."

Guimaraes 'the driving force'

The Sky Sports report reads: "Guimaraes was the driving force. He was everywhere.

"Putting out Leicester fires when they staged a counter and getting on the end of good build-up play from his teammates, although his finishing was slightly lacking. That was the only negative for a player that is going places fast - just like his club are."

Magpies 'ready to go on a rampage'

Writing for the Telegraph, Luke Edwards wrote: "It was the centre back, playing at left back, born in Blyth, who made it as a footballer elsewhere. It was the Newcastle United fan scoring in front of the Gallowgate End who sent Eddie Howe’s side on their way to a first cup semi-final for 18 years. It was Dan Burn.

"A generation of fans have been born, grown up and turned into adults since Newcastle last played a semi final. This was a night of release and relief, as well as wild celebrations, joy and an explosion of love for Howe and his players.

"There has been a lot of pain, a lot of frustration, during those dark, dreary years of underachievement. But this is a new Newcastle and it was in front of a seething, swaying mass of black and white in the stands. A giant is not stirring, it is sitting bolt upright and looks ready to go on a rampage."

Writing for the Daily Mail, Craig Hope wrote: "In life and in football, the journey is often better than the destination. And while Newcastle United are headed for a first domestic semi-final in 18 years and, potentially, their first trophy since 1969, it is amid the delirium of nights such as this that names are stitched into the fabric of a club’s folklore. Enter Dan Burn.

"He had to plead with Brighton to let him realise a boyhood dream and sign for his hometown club 12 months ago. Since then, the 6ft 6ins defender has grown a few inches more, so central has he been to Newcastle’s resurgence. The one thing that had eluded him was a goal. Until now. Not a bad time to score it, either."
