National Mall turf repair forces multi-year closure amid $1 billion capital overhaul

  • Large sections of the National Mall lawn will be closed until January 2027 for turf rehabilitation after summer event damage.
  • Extensive foot traffic from President Donald Trump's Great American State Fair, Fourth of July event, and the Freedom 250 Grand Prix left the grass severely degraded.
  • President Trump claimed without evidence that vandals caused the damage, which also included an anti-Trump slogan printed on the grass in June.
  • The National Park Service said public use limits are necessary for regrowth, though portions of the Mall will remain open to visitors.
  • The restoration effort is part of a broader, taxpayer-funded overhaul of the nation's capital that has cost over $1 billion.
