National Apprenticeship Week - SGS College opens new campus

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) has formally opened a new campus to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

Based within one mile of the education institute’s current Filton Campus, the facility - named SGS Horizon -will specialise in the training of construction apprentices.

The 1,580 mt sq building includes purpose-built workshops, classrooms and IT suites, with the college saying it had been built in “direct response” to the needs of the local sector, amidst “growing demand” for workers to fill skills shortages.

An official launch event, which highlighted the achievements of apprentices and the positive impact they make to businesses and the economy, was attended by SGS students, staff, governors, regional employers and local enterprise partnership representatives.

Sarah Stephens-Lewis, assistant principal for Apprenticeships and employer engagement, said: “Today we celebrated apprentices and showcased the benefits that apprenticeships bring to all involved. We are all excited to have this new dedicated construction apprenticeship training centre whereby students will have first-class facilities to aid their learning.”

SGS College supports more than 1,000 employers with its apprenticeship programme, recruiting more than 600 new apprentices every year.
