Natalya Romaniw on Wagner’s Die Walküre: 'It's not just balls to the wall!'

Natalya Romaniw in Die Walküre rehearsals - (Tristram Kenton)

There are daunting shows for performers — and then there is Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Imagine having to sing The Lord of the Rings over an orchestra summoning the end and then rebirth of the world.

The Ring Cycle is such an epic work — fifteen hours of music — that is split into four parts, each one a mammoth task to put on, which means productions are a rarity and always the hottest ticket in town. After Royal Opera hit big with part one, Das Rheingold, in 2023, this spring we have part two, Die Walküre, arriving thunderously like helicopters over blooming napalm.
